ESL Self-Contained Teacher

I would credit my father as a major influence on my journey to becoming a teacher. He was the one who took my brother and I to church, and he also served as our Sunday School teacher. During presentations, he would practice with us, and I loved being the daughter of the teacher. I often found myself imitating him, setting up my dolls on the bed to recreate the lessons he had taught. I even gave my dolls stickers for good behavior, just like he did in class. As the years went by, I began tutoring classmates, and I felt a deep sense of fulfillment in helping others. Eventually, I began teaching Sunday School myself. By the time I started college, there was no question in my mind that teaching was the path I wanted to follow. I’m truly grateful to have been surrounded by teaching my whole life. It is truly an honor to be able to teach others and have the learn and thrive.

One of my strongest beliefs about teaching is to equip students with skills that will help them when they are in need. Exposing them to news skills, building on skills they have and guiding them through failure, I believe can set them on a path ready to embark in the real world. Personally, what makes me an outstanding teacher is encouraging the adults and students around me to pursue their studies. Those who know me well understand that I love motivating others to thrive. I’ve supported friends who were hesitant to take their beautician exams due to fear, helping them find the courage to take the test. I’ve assisted students through rough academic times, and they have graduated with honors. I’ve helped high school classmates who had no clear plans to enroll in and finish college. I’ve also supported family members who didn’t speak English, helping them learn the language, graduate from college, and find success. Many classroom assistants, with little motivation and encouragement, have gone on to continue their education and become teachers themselves. A friend once said, “If you're close to Jen, get ready to study.” I’d like to think that my greatest contribution is helping others reach their fullest potential.

Education was a career change for me. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Once I began, I never looked back. Totally enjoy working with students, encouraging and motivating them to be the best version of themselves.

I meet regularly with students who are falling short with attendance and/or grades. Discuss with them my 5 Mindset Pillars. Some students just need to know there is someone looking out for them. It can make all the difference. Let them know that they can accomplish anything; the sky is the limit.
