Sixth through Eighth Grade Science Teacher
The decision to become a teacher was deeply influenced by my personal experiences as an immigrant and a parent. When I moved to the United States, I found myself navigating a new and unfamiliar education system with my young children. As a parent, I wanted to understand how the American Educational System operated, in comparison to my own educational background. The experience of trying to comprehend a new system while ensuring my children receive the best possible education is ultimately what sparked my interest in education. I later decided to pursue education as my career, with the hope of making a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families, particularly those who, like me, faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture and system.
The emphasis on student-centered learning, individualism, and the varied pathways for academic success fascinated me. I had many questions about supporting my children's education. I was looking for different resources available to help immigrant families understand the complexities of U.S. education. This pushed me to not only seek answers for myself but also to want to help others who might be in similar situations. The realization that I could help bridge this gap between cultures through education inspired me to become a teacher. Through the lens of my own personal experiences, I wanted to make a difference for students. I chose to teach middle school science specifically because it is an age where curiosity is abundant, and students are beginning to grasp the profound ways in which science shapes their world.
To me, teaching is more than a profession—it is a calling and a profound responsibility. My personal feelings about teaching are rooted in the belief that education is a transformative force capable of opening up windows of opportunities and empowering individuals and communities. My role is more than delivering knowledge to students, I also serve as a guide, helping students navigate the complexities of learning, self-discovery and their impact on the world. Outstanding teachers are defined by connecting with students on a personal level and fostering a classroom environment where curiosity thrives, and every student feels valued. My motto is "Wherever you go, go with all your heart," which I apply to my personal and professional spaces by approaching both with equal passion and commitment. I strive to embody these qualities by remaining a lifelong learner and consistently refining my teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of my students. I always look for professional development opportunities to inspire new ideas for my classroom. I try to continuously improve and provide my students with the best educational experience possible.

Ms. Shayra L. Bustamante
Social Worker
As a young adult entering college, I recognized that my calling in life—one that I believe was placed upon me by God—was to support and advocate for society’s most vulnerable individuals. During my Master of Social Work (MSW) program, I gained invaluable experience working in substance abuse clinics. Upon graduation, I had the opportunity to serve adults transitioning from incarceration through the State Parole Board, helping them find hope and rebuild their sense of self-worth.
Those years provided me with profound experience and a deepened passion for guiding individuals toward positive life choices, ultimately helping to prevent future hardships. Today, I am truly grateful for the privilege of working with bright young minds, encouraging them to recognize their immense potential and empowering them to shape their futures with confidence.
In addition to managing 504 and I&RS cases to support students in reaching their full academic potential, my role within the school extends to fostering a welcoming environment for both students and staff. I achieve this through initiatives such as pep rallies, class lessons, Student of the Month recognition, assemblies, lunch groups, pet therapy visits, and more. My ultimate goal is to ensure that every student knows they have a safe space and a trusted advocate in me, someone they can turn to for support—no matter the need.
