Adult Basic Literacy Education

  • The Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) Plus Program serves persons ages 16 yrs and older who are not currently enrolled in high school. There are two courses of study in the program:

The ESL course has 4 levels and seeks to teach those individuals who have no prior English language learning, to those who need to learn to read, and write in English to eventually obtain their GED.

The GED course serves those individuals who want to study to obtain their GED. Both courses provide pre and post assessments through the TABE Class E for ESL and the CASAS for GED. Laptops are used with computer software to further supplement the direct instruction primarily for the ESL Level 4 and the GED students. Although the program does not offer the GED, HiSet or TASC high school diploma exams, the computer software provides practice tests to assist the students in determining their readiness for these exams.

Registration is limited to 70 students, 40 ESL and 30 GED students. Online registration is scheduled to open September 13th and will continue until the requisite number of students enroll in the program. Classes are scheduled to be in session from September 26, 2023 through April 18, 2024.

The classes are scheduled to meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm until 8pm. The location of classes is:

    John E. Dwyer Technology Academy
123 Pearl St., Elizabeth, NJ 07202
