CBS's Class Act with Chris Wragge visits Frank J. Cicarell Academy
Elizabeth High School – Frank J. Cicarell Academy was visited by CBS News in a featured segment, "Class Act with Chris Wragge" as part of the network’s #BetterTogether campaign in which news anchor Chris Wragge visits schools around the area to highlight outstanding teachers, students, teams, or programs. The news channel came to EHS – FJC to cover the school’s 8th annual Relay for Life event, which is taking place on March 10-11.
EHS – FJC hosts one of the largest Relay for Life events in the country that benefits the American Cancer Society. The segment highlighted the student body and teacher Guido Morsella, including the heartwarming story of Morsella's son Dave, who is bravely battling a rare, life-threatening disease.
For more than 35 years, Relay for Life has been one of the largest peer-to-peer fundraising events in the world for which communities around the globe have come together to raise funds in celebration of cancer survivors, in honor of those who are currently battling, and in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer.
Over the past 8 years, EHS – FJC has raised over $300,000 to support cancer research that will hopefully one day lead to a cancer free world. Teams of EHS-FJC students have been participating in fundraising activities throughout the year and pushing toward their $100,000 goal in their journey to this culminating event. Most recently, the school hosted a 5k run/walk at Nomahegan Park in Cranford that raised another $2,000 towards EHS-FJC’s grand total.
Those in attendance during the "Class Act with Chris Wragge" segment included Elizabeth Board of Education President Iliana Chevres, Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer, and EPS School Business Administrator/Board Secretary Harold E. Kennedy, Jr. Among those anticipated to attend the Relay for Life event to offer their support to EHS – FJC and to honor those who have been affected by cancer include EBOE Vice President Charlene Bathelus Dorgely and EBOE Member Maria Carvalho, as well as numerous VIP cancer survivors.
