Board of Education Meeting January 14, 2025
The January 14 Elizabeth Board of Education business meeting at Donald Stewart Early Childhood Center School No. 51 opened with a moment of silence for Retired Thomas A. Edison Career & Technical Academy bus driver Frank Marinaccio, retired Visual and Performing Arts Department administrative secretary Debra Lillian Carroll, and retired George Washington School No. 1 custodian Nathaniel Burns,
In honor of School Board Recognition Month, Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer and School Business Administrator Harold E. Kennedy, Jr. presented the members of the Elizabeth Board of Education a framed resolution signed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy that recognizes the countless hours and tireless work performed by the Board to ensure the students of Elizabeth Public Schools receive a high quality education.
Board President Stanley J. Neron then presented the student representative to the Board for the January meeting, senior Jeissy Chevez of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson STEM Academy, with a Board certificate. In addition to her role as Student Government Secretary, Chevez is a senior peer mentor and actively involved in various clubs, all of which have kept her deeply connected to the programs and activities at JVJ STEM Academy. During the meeting, Chevez provided her report to the members of the Board and the public in attendance.
Board President Stanley Neron presented a video spotlighting the EPD Mentoring Program he sponsors. The video highlighted the partnership between Elizabeth Public Schools and the Elizabeth Police Department that provides students at select district schools with weekly mentoring from local law enforcement officers as well as team building activities.
John Swisher, Partner of Suplee, Clooney, & Company provided an auditor’s report of the school district for the 2023-2024 school year that consists of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and the Auditor’s Management Report (AMR). Both the ACFR and AMR reached the conclusion that the district is in good standing and in solid financial condition.
