EBOE MTG @ Sotomayor School No. 25
Prior to the official start of the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting at Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25 on September 20, the Board celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month and publicly recognized the renaming of School No. 25 in honor of the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. A resolution was previously passed by the Board officially renaming the school as Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25 on December 12, 2019.
Board President Iliana Chevres welcomed the audience and spoke briefly about National Hispanic Heritage Month and how we were celebrating the many Hispanic cultures and people in our community and throughout the United States. Several schools joined in the celebration by performing for the meeting’s audience, which included “Pirates of the Caribbean – Rumba” by Armand Van Heldan, performed by students of Elizabeth Public Schools; Timeline of Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25, performed by students of Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25; “Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25 Celebración!,” an Hispanic Heritage Month Original Song performed by students of Sonia Sotomayor School No. 25; “Rumores de la Caketa” by Issac Albeniz, performed by Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy Student Particio Olivero; Juan Pablo Duarte – José Julián Martí School No. 28 Hispanic Heritage Cultural Showcase, performed by students of Juan Pablo Duarte – José Julián Martí School No. 28; Terence C. Reilly School No. 7 Hispanic Heritage Live Musical Museum, performed by students of Terence C. Reilly School No. 7; “Maria Luisa” by J. Sagreras, performed by Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy student Ledia Heneen; and “Quimbara” by Celia Cruz, performed by students of Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy.
At the start of the business meeting, the Board held a moment of silence in honor of Special Services Home Instruction Teacher Sharon Robin King Jones and Benjamin Franklin School No. 13 6 Hour General Worker Sonia R. Gomez.
