On May 23, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy was certified as the First National AVID Demonstration High School in Elizabeth. This is the highest level of distinction from AVID that any school can receive. To become the first and only AVID National Demonstration High School in Elizabeth is an enormous honor for the AVID site team, all students, teachers and staff at John E. Dwyer Technology Academy.
AVID, Advanced Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary school through postsecondary school. AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and student performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research-based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.
Deep review of Dwyer student’s data showed an increase in student academic performance, acceptance to colleges, including Ivy league colleges, and students receiving thousands of dollars in scholarships from prestigious organizations and universities.
Led by AVID site coordinator and guidance counselor, Ms. Aimee Saluccio, along with the Dwyer Technology Academy site team which includes Mr. Sanchez, Ms. Aleman, Ms. Campbell, Ms. Tizianna Campbell, Ms. Sonia Dias, Ms. Grzegorzek, Mr. Jacinto, Ms. Saporito, Ms. Valentin, Ms. Vazquez, Ms. Litos, Mr. Victor and Ms. Velasco, they were able to take AVID to the next level. Special thanks to all Dwyer faculty, students, custodians, security guards, secretaries and staff who worked tirelessly and contributed to the success of our validation day. The collaboration from everyone was instrumental to be able to receive this prestigious recognition.
Among those in attendance to celebrate the National Demonstration School designation by AVID were Elizabeth Board of Education President Stephanie G. Pestana, Board Members Rosa Moreno Ortega and Nathalie Hernandez, Union County Freeholder Sergio Granados, Union County Undersheriff Amilcar Colon, Colombian Consul General Divia Cepeda Rojas, and members of Elizabeth Public Schools central administration.
