At the Elizabeth Board of Education business meeting held on July 15, the Board recognized the Elizabeth High School Boys Track & Field relay team who made it all the way to the Nike Outdoor National Championships, held at the legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. As a 4x400 meter relay team, Zyeim Lawrence, Vance Thelemaque, Antonio Alvin Roopchand, and Gregory McQueen, led by head coach Austin Issac-Jareau Holman and sprint coach Anthony Williams, went undefeated in every competition in the State of New Jersey and secured the state’s fastest time this past season of 3:17.68. Major titles include Union County Relay, Union County Individual, Group 4, and Meet of Champions winners. After state competition, they traveled to Eugene, Oregon for the Nike High School Nationals at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. At nationals, they ran three relays, placing 3rd in the 1,000 meter Swedish, 6th in the 800 meter Super Sprint, and 3rd in the 4x400 meter, earning medals and being honored as All Americans in each of the events. To emphasize their amazing achievements, their outstanding performances at the Nationals gave each of them 3x All-American status.

Class of 2022 member Gregory McQueen was also 1st Team All Union County and Group 4 in the 200 meter dash. Greg is the first athlete in Union County history to win the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes and the 4x400 meter relay at the Union County Championships.

Class of 2021 graduate Vance Thelemaque was also 1st Team All Union County in the 400 meter Intermediate Hurdles and will be continuing his education and athletic career at Montclair State University.

Class of 2021 graduate Antonio Alvin Roopchand was also 1st Team All Union County in the 400 meter dash and will be continuing his education and athletic career at Coffeeville Community College in Kansas.

The Board also recognized Colombian Independence Day by presenting a resolution in honor of the contributions of Colombians in the City of Elizabeth and beyond as well as showing virtual performances honoring Colombian heritage, which included students from the ESL Summer Enrichment Program performing "Soy Simon Bolivar" by Simon Bolivar and “La Pollera Colora” by author Wilson Choperena and musician Juan Bautista Madera Castro.
