EBOE Budget Meeting May 4th
At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting on May 4 at J. Christian Bollwage Finance Academy, Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer and School Business Administrator /Board Secretary Harold E. Kennedy, Jr. presented the schools-based budget for the 2023-2024 school year.
The proposed budget, projected to be nearly $715M, includes over $590M in state aid and more than $50M in federal aid. Among the highlights of the budget are the acquisition of two new school sites (St. Michael’s and Immaculate Conception) to address increased enrollment by opening a School No. 15 Annex and a Newcomer Center for grades 9-12, the increase of 51 positions in the district (48 teachers, 1 guidance counselor, 1 nurse, and 1 vice principal), new academic programs, Parent Education Institute events, capital projects in various schools, new school buses, and a 0% tax increase for local taxpayers for the ninth straight school year. The budget also allows for all programs in the current year to be sustained along with the addition of new program for next year.
The proposed budget was adopted unanimously by the members of the Board.
