EPS Students View Black Panther in Honor of Black History Month
Students at School Nos. 5, 15, and 20 were treated to a screening of the movie Black Panther by Elizabeth Board of Education member Jerry Jacobs in honor of Black History Month.
Black Panther is a culturally significant movie, including a predominantly black cast taking the spotlight of the globally-recognized Marvel Character Universe (MCU) platform, the highest grossing film ever ($1.347 billion) by a black director, and perhaps most importantly, a story that portrays great strength, intelligence, and advancement among the characters that has the potential to influence interest in science, technology, and Africa for young black Americans and children of all races.
The critically-acclaimed film received numerous awards and nominations, with three Oscar wins at the 91st Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design among seven nominations, including Best Picture. Black Panther was the first MCU film to win an Academy Award and the first superhero film ever to receive a Best Picture nomination. The film also received three nominations at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, two nominations (and two wins) at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, and twelve nominations (and three wins) at the 24th Critics' Choice Awards.
