Resource fair to assist Puerto Rican families displaced by Hurricane Maria
The Elizabeth Board of Education, in collaboration with New Jersey Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders Chairman Sergio Granados, City of Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, City of Elizabeth Councilman Nelson Gonzalez, and Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer, hosted a resource fair to assist Puerto Rican families displaced by Hurricane Maria. Representatives of the City of Elizabeth Department of Health and Human Services, the Housing Authority of the City of Elizabeth (HACE), the Elizabeth Fire Department, the American Red Cross, and Union County College were among those to join the collaborators in offering assistance with individual FEMA requests; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program; English as a Second Language (ESL); postsecondary education; health services; temporary local travel/commuting; food; clothing; housing; emotional care; and job referrals. Students from Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy and team members from the district’s guidance department were also in attendance to help support those in need.
