High School Teams Honored @ City Council Mtg


The Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. Health and Public Safety Academy Rifle Team and the Elizabeth Boys Varsity Soccer team were honored by Mayor J. Christian Bollwage and the members of Elizabeth City Council at the City Council meeting on April 9 at City Hall.

The Halsey Rifle Team took first place overall among thirteen competing teams at the New England Metro Championship in Beverly, Massachusetts on March 16. Additionally, the Halsey Rifle Team had the "High Shooter" (Alejandro Garcia- 263 out of a possible 300 points) and the 3rd place overall shooter (Angel Gonzalez- 251 points) among the 100 shooters who participated in the event.

Elizabeth Soccer, under first year coach Jacques Gonzales, finished its fall season with a record of 16-3-2, which included its first sectional championship since 2015 when it defeated Scotch Plains 2-1 in the North 2, Group 4. They were Union County Tournament semifinalist and outscored opponents 55-23, while posting eight shutouts in the process. The team was ranked No. 15 in the state in the final Top 20 rankings by and received a No. 100 national ranking from MaxPreps, a national high school sports affiliate of CBS. Elizabeth was undefeated at home and was rank in the top 20 the entire season. All-State Third Team, All-Group Second Team, and All- Union County Conference First Team selection Henry Chavez led Elizabeth with 11 goals and four assists, while All-Group Third Team and All- Union County Conference First Team selection Josser Amaya had nine goals and 11 assists. All-Union County Conference Second Team selection Youkendjy Pacius scored nine goals and added eight assists.
