Curriculum Resources

The Elizabeth Public Schools Bilingual & ESL Program is designed to meet both the academic and social emotional needs of Multilingual Learners in grades K to 12.

The EPS Bilingual & ESL curriculum:

• Delivers rigorous grade level instruction to master both New Jersey Student Learning Standards and the WIDA English Language Development Standards
• Ensures accessibility to the general education curricula by developing and incorporating native language and scaffolded instructional materials and resources.
• Leverages knowledge and skills in the first language to transfer that skill set to the second language- English.  The stronger academic instruction in the native language (L1), the stronger academic English (L2) (Thomas and Collier).
• Develops the Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP)(Cummins). Students develop the English language in each of the language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing through the social and instructional language, the language of language arts, the language of mathematics, the language of science and the language of social studies.
